News - New Library plans on view
Revised Library Plans Revealed Submitted by Jim 18 Dec 2008

Revised plans have been revealed for a new library in Holmfield Ave West. >> View Plans << on the L.C.C. site.

A summary of the previous plans >> Are Here << along with additional information for comparison.

The revised plan increases the size of the library by utilising a first floor. Although on the previous application L.C.C. felt that a new facility should include other community services such as parish council officers and a room for police/ other organisations surgeries. An office for the parish council/police and other organisations surgeries will not now be provided due to the restricted space available at the site.

According to the L.C.C. after a comprehensive options appraisal, where different sites were sought and coupled with the results of a L.F.E. parish consultation exercise, it was decided that the current site was the preferred solution.

Although the overall size of the library will increase, it is not expected that the numbers visiting the library will increase dramatically. The library is currently well supported and the aim is to improve the quality of services and not necessarily the quantity.

A travel survey was conducted by LCC which demonstrated high numbers of visitors traveling to the library on foot, and those that do use private cars tend to be using other services locally, such as the post office opposite and a shop to the side.

Holmfield Primary School is at the end of Holmfield Avenue, a supermarket, doctors, dentist and opticians are all in close proximity. The parish council have suggested a one way road system may be the answer to the traffic problems.

NB: An application for three additional houses to the rear of 11-17, Holmfield Avenue West and spaces for ten vehicles are shown on the plans submitted to Blaby District Council.

A reminder of District Councillor Tony Dolbys' report LFE LiFE - Winter 2007/08 edition

In his report in the magazine relating to a traffic review, he advised that a complaint had been received concerning the heavy traffic and inconsiderate parking on both Park Drive and Holmfield Avenue West.

Following advice he arranged for a petition to be organised. A local resident of Park Drive did a great job in obtaining 110signatures from local residents. This was presented to the Highways Forum meeting on 28 November 2007. They accepted that it should go forward into the system and the County has been given six months to produce an action plan.

The previous plans submitted >> Are Here << required Sandu's newsagents to be demolished, it appears for whatever reason that those plans have been dismissed.

Whether the location selected after the L.C.C. consultation exercise is the correct one for a new library only time will tell.
