Young Peoples Meeting Shelter Submitted by Gerry 04 Dec 2008

As residents and councillors arrived for the monthly Parish Council meeting on 20th November, a group of young people that were gathered around the Parish Hall waiting for a pre-arranged meeting with Youth workers, became interested in the agenda of the meeting.

It was clear from discussions, that an application for funding for a youth shelter in the parish by a member of the Monday Night Youth Club had been successful and they wanted to know if this would discussed at the meeting.

It was suggested that two representatives from the group of young people might like to attend the meeting and ask the question themselves. Two of the group took the opportunity to do so.

The chairman opened the meeting and as is usual suspended it to allow the public to ask questions.

It was at this point the youngsters were given the opportunity to address the council, who advised the chairman that a successful application for funding for a shelter had been made from the Youth Opportunity Fund, the figure being just over £8000. They also informed the chairman that in Kirby Muxloe, a similar structure has been provided and it is well used by groups from Kirby Muxloe L.F.E. and further afield.

Youth Shelter imageThe shelter in Kirby Muxloe has a roof, seats and is open to one side and has an inbuilt audio system. The youngsters suggested a site for the shelter in the far corner of the sports field away from nearby homes and maintain that with one focal point for them to meet that they and their friends would no longer need to be wander about the parish and would be of benefit to L.F.E. young people.

Questions were raised relating to the possibility of the structure being subjected to graffiti, its general cleanliness and the overall tidiness in and around the shelter. The young people assured the council that because it was to be treated as 'theirs' they would monitor it with a guarantee that graffiti would not be a problem. They pointed out that No problems have been encountered at the Kirby Muxloe shelter. If the project were to as proceed, it has to be implemented by March 2009 as part of the funding requirement.

The chairman thanked the youngsters for attending the meeting and advised them that they would give their request for a shelter due consideration, the young people then left the meeting.

Following the discussion, PC Ahmed remarked that some of the young people that had requested the shelter, were part of the same group were were constantly being spoken to about their antisocial behaviour in the community. He suggested that the council should only consider a shelter if the behaviour of the group improved over a period of time and such a benefit should earned.

The Council agreed to consider the request and the matter will now be discussed in more detail at a separate meeting that would include members of the council, parishioners and the young people themselves. The dates of any future meeting(s) will be published as soon as possible and are likely to be in January.

The council also heard from residents attending the same meeting from the David Wilson estate. They complained about large groups of young people congregating around the retail outlet on Forest House Lane who also created litter and intimidated residents, with in one case in a particular having very frightening implications and appears to corroborate PC Ahmeds observations.
