Ten Lane Motorway (M1) through Leicestershire is
"outrageous" 10 August 2007
The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) spoke
out after approval was given to widen a stretch of the motorway
between junctions 25 and 28.
Proposals to widen the M1 through Leicestershire are being
discussed.
One option is to create an eight-lane motorway and allow
drivers to use the hard shoulder at busy times.
The alternative is building a 10-lane road between junctions
21 and 21a.
The plans are part of an overall scheme to widen the M1 from
three lanes to four between Leicester and Chesterfield.
The Government has said it would consider using an "active
traffic management system" which allows drivers to use
the hard shoulder of the motorway at the busiest times. Graham
Stocks, chairman of Leicestershire CPRE, described the idea
as "utterly outrageous" and said it went against
policies to cut car use.
"Just think what could be done with this money to transform
public transport," he said.
An announcement on the Leicestershire section is due in November.
Work would start in 2010
